Tag/Day 3.5 auf der/on ISLAND PRINCESS in Ketchikan, AK

In Ketchikan müssen wir früh wieder an Bord.

In Ketchikan we need to back quite early.

We booked ahead a Totem Bight Rainforest Tour by Northern Tour of Alaska. That was cheap, so we made a payment in advance. I would never do it again to book and pay in advance. It was like Asterix in Avernian country (from "Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield" - one long street and one charcoal and wine dealer next to the other) and I would decide more spontaneous depending on my mood and the weather.

We got instructions on our confirmation to walk over to the tourist office. But they had a hut at our pier too, and they offered us to start here.

The tours were done in such vans. First, we were told that we had plenty of time and once all the seats were sold it went quite quickly.

Why I would not book such a tour again: you had in the bus everyone, and unfortunately our driver had some problem to fix the air ventilation/condition. In the front everything was clear and in the rear it was like a sauna. If air ventilation was added the guests in the front said that it was too cold to them and so it was switched off and we sat in a sauna again. What made me most angry: we were the first who booked and paid and showed up, and we were not allowed to sit in the front. We should keep them for handicapped, but there was not any but only guests who did not want allowing us to have fresh air. Next time I would book a cab or car rental and so I am captain of the air condition.

We went to Totem Bight State Historical Park.

Es ging dann zum Totem Bight State Historical Park.

Hier gibt es wohl Bären.

Here they had bears.

But that were animal-proof latches.

Aber diese Mülleimer sind gegen Tiere gesichert.

Eine Karte wäre toll.

A map would be great.

But there was not any.

We asked inside, but they did not give us any: we should ask our tour guide who knew everything.

Nice... but it was not so attractive as I hoped to be... I am proud to be a philistine...

That was the rainforest they were talking of... rain yes... forest yes... but a rain forest like we had in Costa Rica... definitely no...

Uns werden die Pflanzen erläutert.

She explained us the plants.

Sieht aus, wie ein Fischspieß bei Nordsee...

Looked like a fish skewer like we had with our Nordsee-Fish Restaurant Chain in Germany.

We walked against the direction of the tour busses...

As said before: we had luck with the weather, and for my success, I had my Hurtigruten-Sydvester (Norwegian Coastal Line's South Western Rain Hat) with me.

No idea what this was but I am sure we will have escargots or fungus for tonight's dinner.

Inside the hall we had to give the Swiss group priority. So we could listen to some explanations in Swiss German which we could not understand properly.

Our tour guide showed us how to store something nowadays.

So the bears had to chance to get it.

So kommen die Bären nicht dran.

Typisch für Nationalparks: keine WCs sondern Plumpsklos...

Typical for national parks: no water-toilets but pit latrines...

On the tree there was an aerie but no eagle came by.

A longer stop in a souvenir shop was hold.

Here you got free cookies and coffee. To make you comfortable to stay and to shop. I bought a magnet. T-Shirts with "Men on Tree" were not available.

Hier gibt es kostenlos Kekse und Kaffee. Hauptsache man verweilt hier und kauft ein. Ich habe einen Magneten gekauft. T-Shirts mit "Men on Trees" gibt es leider nicht.

A Swiss group used the school bus... They were on CELEBRITY MILLENIUM. One also knew ISLAND PRINCESS and was jealous. Should I cancel for 2014? Die only guests who might be angry are Bruno and me... maybe my parents and my sister... 5 have never cruised before and cannot compare.

The first time in my life I saw the symbol of the introduction of the Postal Codes in West Germany 1962: A forget-me-not.
