Tag/Day 6 auf der/on GRAND PRINCESS in Ensenada, Mexico

GRAND PRINCESS ist noch nicht mit dem neuen schnellen Medaillion-Internet ausgestattet. Es sieht nur so aus, als ob etwas erneuert wurde. Auf jeden all schön übersichtlich. Deswegen das Aufladen von Bildern ist extrem mühsam. Mit Hilfe des VPN-Tunnels von Strong VPN kann ich jedoch zumindest ohne satellitenbedingte Unterbrechung die Bilder heraufladen.



GRAND PRINCESS was not equipped yet with the new fast Medaillion-Internet. It looked only like something was renewed. Everything looked very clear. So upload of pictures was quite strenuous. With the help of a VPN-tunnel of Strong VIP, I could upload the pictures without the interruptions by the satellite.

Und auch sonst an Bord beginnt der Tag sehr schön. Wir scheinen schon sehr nah an Land zu sein. Ich sehe einen Vogel. Auf der Suche nach dem offenen Deck komme ich ins Schwarz-Weiß-Fotostudio.



Apart from that, the day began very nice. It looked that we were quite close to the shore. I saw a bird. While finding the open deck, I ran into the Black-and-White Photo Studio.

That was too late for me.

Checking with the front desk came to the result: I could change, but I MUST return again PERSONALLY and present the debarkation information sheet: there they removed the Yellow-2-tags and disposed of them. Then they attached the Light Blue-3-tags. Just handing over some Light Blue-3-tags and asking me to dispose of the Yellow-2-tags did not apply to the protocol.



Meine Rückfrage bei der Rezeption ergibt: ich darf wechseln, aber ich MUSS die Ausschiffungsinformation an der Rezeption PERSÖNLICH vorbeibringen: dort werden die Gelb-2-Anhänger heruntergenommen und weggeworfen. Dann werden die Hellblau-3-Anhänger dran geheftet. Einfach Hellblau-3-Anhänger mitzugeben und mich zu bitten die Gelb-2-Anhänger wegzuwerfen, entspricht nicht dem Protokoll.

Da ich sehr früh auf bin, gehe ich zum Frühstück für Frühaufsteher zunächst. Dort gibt es aber nur Gebäck. Im Da Vinci teilt man uns den schlechtesten Tisch zu, den es gibt. Hier ist es kalt. Wir sitzen an einer inaktiven Servicestation. Aber ich habe ja einen Termin mit dem Hoteldirektor - das wird jetzt nochmals zum Thema.



As I was very early I went first to the breakfast for early risers. There they had only pastries. In the Da Vinci, they allocated the worst table to us. Here everything was cold. We sit at an inactive service station. But I had an appointment with the Hotel Director scheduled - this would become one of the subjects.

Welcome to Ensenada, Mexico. Here in the cruise terminal, you may take on a Sombrero to make a selfie for 1 USD. They had here coke with real sugar but "High Fructose Corn Syrup". And they had my "Frit-os". But the Mexican recipe was slightly more spicy. They had a pharmacy with every you need as a man and I was really considering to buy the whole stock on blue pills to sell it in Switzerland. From the profit, I could finance our next cruise in an Owner-Suite. I did not do it since I did not have any access to our company's analysis to find out if it was really inside what should be inside... the risk was too big that the stuff might be not o.k. and I could not sell it...



Willkommen in Ensenada. Hier im Cruise Terminal darf man für 1 USD sich einen Sombrero aufsetzen und sich selbst damit fotografieren. Es gibt hier Coca-Cola mit echtem Zucker statt "High Fructose Corn Syrup". Und es gibt meine Frit-os. Aber die mexikanische Rezeptur ist doch schärfer. Es gibt eine Apotheke für alles, was man als Mann so braucht und ich erwäge ernsthaft, den gesamten Bestand an blauen Pillen aufzukaufen und in der Schweiz zu verkaufen. Ich könnte wirklich bei der Gewinnspanne die nächste Kreuzfahrt in der Eigner-Suite finanzieren. Ich mache es nicht, weil ich leider auch keinen Zugriff auf unsere Analytik in der Firma habe, um festzustellen, ob alles auch drin ist, was drin sein muss... Das Risiko ist mir doch zu groß, dass die Ware nicht in Ordnung ist und ich sie nicht loswerde...

Ich bin Nichtraucher. Aber das Schiff anscheinend nicht. Leider können wir später unterwegs nicht anhalten, um Bilder zu machen, weil wir auf einer einspurigen Straße ohne Haltemöglichkeit uns befinden.

Willkommen in Ensenada.

Eigentlich ja schon zum 2. Mal. Nur damals auf der CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2010 endete das ja im Fiasko. Wir kamen mitten in der Nacht an und mussten sofort an Bord.



Actually it was the 2nd time. But then on CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2010 it ended up as an desaster. We came in the middle of the night and need to go onboard immediately.

We booked a tour with Tours by Mariana. Mariana Hammon met us outside the port area. You need to walk about 5-7 minutes to the exit. Later you could be taken back directly to the ship. But not collected. First, we walked alongside the Promenade to the fish market. For 2/3 of the guests, the day would end their day in Ensenada in this touristic area. Mariana would love to show us that Ensenada was more than just the promenade and also made the suggestion not to eat here where all the tourists were eating. In this area, we missed only the fountain plays which were running for few hours according to a schedule.



Gebucht hatten wir bei Tours by Mariana. Mariana Hamman holt uns außerhalb des Hafengeländes ab. Man läuft gut 5-7 Minuten bis zum Ausgang. Später darf man direkt an das Schiff zurückgebracht werden. Aber eben nicht abgeholt. Zunächst laufen wir entlang der Promenade bis zum Fischmarkt. Für 2/3 der Gäste endet dann auch ihr Tag in Ensenada in diesem touristischen Bereich. Mariana will uns jedoch zeigen, dass eben Ensenada aus mehr als der Uferpromenade besteht und schlägt uns daher auch vor, nicht hier zu essen, wo alle Touristen essen. In diesem Bereich verpassen wir allerdings die Wasserspiele die stundenweise nach einem Plan laufen.

Unser Fahrer ist Alejandro Moreno, der uns auf der anderen Seite des Fischmarktes abholt.

Mariana stood in front, and as we were not so many it was easy to understand her.



Mariana bleibt vorne stehen und da wir nicht so viele sind, kann man sehr gut verstehen.

Wir hätten noch ein paar mitnehmen können. Der Bus hatte noch Platz. Aber wir haben sehr spezielles Programm. Gerne hätten wir ein paar von der Crew mitgenommen, aber die haben heute eine Sicherheitsübung.



We could have taken some more with us. The bus had more capacity. But we had an exceptional itinerary. We really would love to take some of the crew with us, but they had the day a life drill.

We went through a local panorama route to have a view on Ensenada from the top. Unfortunately, there was no viewpoint which allowed a photo stop.



Wir fahren über eine lokale Panoramastrecke, um einmal Ensenada von oben zu sehen. Leider gibt es hier keinen Aussichtspunkt, der einen Halt zum Fotografieren erlaubt.

Der nächste Halt ist am Museum der regionalen Geschichte von Ensenada. Mariana erläutert uns, dass Ensenada und die Baja California kulturell nicht unbedingt zu dem Weltbild Mexikos gehört, dass man normalerweise hat. Gemeinsam mit Luis Enrique Flores Ceseña vom lokalen Museum werden uns die gesichtlichen Zusammenhänge erläutert. So sehen wir auch nichts, was wir aus Tulum (CARNIVAL FASCINATION 2008 und CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010) kennen. Wir sind eben in Baja California, das aufgrund seiner Lage als Halbinsel eher isoliert betrachtet werden muss. Wir sind in einem ehemaligen Gefängnis. Und wir sind hier auch zusammen mit Schiffsmodellbauern. Leider gibt es kein Modell von einem Kreuzfahrtschiff, weil sie sich eben auf die regionalen Bootstypen spezialisiert haben. Es macht aber sehr viel Spaß den Männern bei der Arbeit zuzugucken.



The next stop was at the Museum of Regional History of Ensenada. Mariana explained to us that Ensenada and the Baja California did not fit to the general global picture people had normally on Mexico. Together with the Luis Enrique Flores Ceseña fo the local museum they explained historical relations. So we did see that we saw and knew from Tulum, Mexico (CARNIVAL FASCINATION 2008 and CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010). We were in Baja California that was due to the location quite separated as it is peninsular. We were in a former prison. And we were here with ship model-builders. Unfortunately, they had no model of a cruise ship, since they were specialized in local types of boats. It was a pleasure to see them working.

They had a downtown area for Americans.

Eigentlich sieht es wie in einer Kleinstadt in den USA aus.

Sobald die Kreuzfahrtschiffe weg sind, ist das Leben hier auch vorbei.



But when the cruise ships were gone the life here was also over.

We went for lunch to the downtown area for Mexicans. The "golden rule" for the tour guide: only at places where we would not meet other tourists otherwise no tips. That made us eating in many places in the world where we could eat for little money real yummy food. And Tacos Castillo in Ensenada added to this list. Here they deep-fried fish and shrimps and they added toppings on. You topped yourself the sauce you liked. But I got everything without sauces. Just the shrimps I could quickly eat without sauces. Such a natural flavor and juicy: merely yummy!!! And for really little money.



Wir fahren zum Mittagessen in die Innenstadt für Mexikaner. Die "Goldene Regel" für den Fremdenführer: nur an Orte, an denen wir keine weiteren Touristen antreffen, sonst gibt es kein Trinkgeld. Das hat dazu geführt, dass wir an vielen Orten der Welt schon für sehr wenig Geld sehr lecker essen konnten. Und Tacos Castillo in Ensenada wird auf die Liste aufgenommen. Hier werden Fisch und Shrimps frischgebacken und anschließend belegt. Man tut sich selbst die passende Sauce drauf. Aber ich habe alles natürlich ohne Saucen bekommen. Schon alleine die Shrimps hätte ich so ganz ohne Saucen essen können. So ein natürlicher Geschmack und saftig: einfach nur lecker!!! Und für extrem wenig Geld.

Und ich nehme Kaffeeeis. Ich habe eh keinen Platz mehr für einen Kaffee.



And I took a coffee ice cream. I had no more space for a coffee.

And next door there was Tortas La Michoacana. But here we could find the reasons why should not do a gastro-bypass-surgery: They had tortas with great grilled pork. I should not have breakfast this morning onboard. The next time we will have here breakfast before we went to the museum! And for miles around: no other tourists visible: and all shown in Spanish or bilingual.



Und nebenan ist noch Tortas La Michoacana. Aber hier sind wirklich Argumente gegen eine Magenverkleinerung: Es gibt hier Tortas mit toll gegrilltem Schweinefleisch. Ich hätte heute Morgen an Bord nicht frühstücken sollen. Das nächste Mal wird hier gefrühstückt, bevor wir ins Museum gehen! Und weit und breit: keine Touristen zu sehen: und alle Beschriftungen in Spanisch oder zweisprachig.

Da wir noch ein wenig Zeit haben gehen wir kurz in die Kathedrale "Nostra Senora de Guadalupe". Sonntags gibt es neun Gottesdienste. Das gibt es ja nicht einmal mehr im Paderborner Dom. Dort gelten sie ja als besonders katholisch und es gibt "nur" sechs Gottesdienste am Sonntag. Und vor der Kirche gibt es wunderschönes Obst und Gemüse zu kaufen.



As we still had time we went quickly to the Cathedrale "Nostra Senora de Guadalupe". On Sunday they had nine services. Even in the most Catholic town in Germany, you had "only" six services. In front of the church, you could buy beautiful fruits and vegetables.

We were living in a wine area (Bergstrasse, Germany). So for us, it is quite normal that vineyards were mostly at the edge of the towns. Not very often in the town centers. But here around the winery, they set up a center for gourmets where you can find many products which made your life nicer. So you have art but also meat or coffee with Barra de Café. Here you could select for yourself which kind of beans you would have your coffee prepared. Bruno was in paradise.



Das Weinanbaugebiet Bergstraße ist die Nr. 1 der deutschen Weinanbaugebiete. In dieser Gegen wohnen wir. Kaum bekannt, weil hier eher auf Qualität statt Quantität gesetzt wird. Außerhalb der Bergstraße kann man die Weine eher selten kaufen. Hier und auch aus dem Kraichgau, wo ich vorher gewohnt habe, kenne ich es so, dass die Weingüter oft an Randlagen der Orte sind. Selten so mitten in der Stadt. Aber hier ist einfach um die alte Kelterei eine Art Feinschmecker-Zentrum entstanden, in dem man auch viele andere Produkte kaufen kann, die das Leben verschönern. So gibt es neben Kunst und Fleisch auch Kaffee bei Barra de Café. Hier kann sich selbst auswählen, welche Bohnen verwendet werden sollen. Bruno ist im Paradies.

But we got a kind of plum-date-jelly on our cheese plate. So the day could continue this way.



Aber wir bekommen eine Art Pflaumen-Dattel-Gelee auf unserer Käseplatte. So kann der Tag weitergehen.

Wir sind bei den Bodegas de Santo Tomas. Hier werden wir von Oswaldo Cuadra erwartet und geführt.



We were with the Bodegas de Santo Tomas. And here Oswaldo Cuadra was waiting for us and took us around.

Now we were no wine drinkers because three of us could not stand alcohol. So we requested only an olive-oil-tasting. That was no problem: we need to pay the tasting anyway separately, and so we had to obligations to purchase any. Here Alfredo of Santo Tomas took the time to bring us closer to the olive oils of Santo Tomas. Like with the blue pills: the prices here for olive oil here and in Santa Barbara, CA were different like night and day. Two sorts of the olive oils tasted so well to us that we also bought some bottles for our families at home. While in theory, I could quickly get the blue pills into our baggage and they had no weight, I really would have problems with the olive oils as they were quite heavy. So I need to withdraw this plan also to sell it in Switzerland to refinance my next cruise. It was always fun later onboard when you see the eyes of the security guys that they caught someone with wine and it was only olive oil. Many of them who were from the ship looked very jealously to our olive oil tasting. Finally, we tested also some chocolate from Mexico which was made to pair and enjoy it with their own wine. But it was too perfect without wine, so we bought some of them.



Nun sind wir keine Weintrinker, weil drei von uns keinen Alkohol vertragen. Daher haben wir ausdrücklich nur eine Olivenöl-Probe angefragt. Das ist gar kein Problem: die Probe müssen wir sepearat bezahlen und daher sind wir auch später nicht in einer Kaufverpflichtung. Hier nimmt sich Alfredo von Santo Tomas sehr viel Zeit, um uns die Olivenöle von Santo Tomas näher zu bringen. Auch hier verhält es sich so wie mit den blauen Pillen: die Preise hier für Olivenöl und in Santa Barbara unterscheiden sich wie Tag und Nacht. Zwei der Olivenölsorten schmecken uns so gut, dass wir auch unsere Familien zu Hause damit beschenken wollen. Während ich theoretisch die blauen Pillen gut im Gepäck unterbekomme und sie nichts wiegen, hätte ich das Problem mit dem Olivenöl, dass sie doch recht schwer sind. Daher muss ich auch den Plan hier fallen lassen, es in der Schweiz zu verkaufen, um meine nächste Kreuzfahrt damit zu finanzieren. Es macht ja auch später an Bord Spaß, wenn die Augen der Sicherheitskontrolle leuchten und sie jemanden mit Wein erwischt haben und es nur Olivenöl ist. Übrigens gucken viele, die vom Schiff da sind, sehr neidisch zu unserer Olivenöl-Probe. Am Schluss testen wir noch Schokolade aus Mexiko, die eigentlich extra für den Genuss des eigenen Weins produziert wurde. Aber uns schmeckt sie auch ohne Wein, so dass wir davon auch noch etwas kaufen.

Als wir fertig sind, sind alle Reisegruppen vom Schiff weg. Kurzerhand führt uns Oscar in die Schatzkammer, die wie ein Tresor gesichert ist. Hier finden sich die historischen wertvollen Weine des Weinguts.



When we finished all tour groups of the ship were gone. So Oscar took us at short notice to the treasure chamber which was secured like a bank safe. Here you found the expensive historical wines of the winery.

Actually, the tour should be finished after the four hours we agreed. Mariana insisted us to see the former Casino of Ensenada without charging for extra time. Today it was the House of Cultures. It was only ten minutes walking distance from the pier. Then they had the Hollywood stars here and other American celebrities here as guests. Today it was an event venue and home of museum and exhibitions.



Eigentlich wäre die Tour nach den vier vereinbarten Stunden zu Ende. Mariana besteht darauf, dass wir auf jeden Fall noch zum ehemaligen Casino von Ensenada fahren müssen, ohne dass uns Mehrkosten berechnet werden. Heute ist es Haus der Kulturen. Es liegt nur zehn Minuten zu Fuß vom Anleger entfernt. Früher waren hier Filmgrößen Hollywoods und andere amerikanischen Berühmtheiten zu Gast. Heute ist es ein Veranstaltungssaal und Heimat von Museen und Ausstellungen.

Direkt im Gebäudekomplex gibt es auch die Bar Andaluz. Hier wurde 1948 die Margarita erfunden. Eigentlich nur, um zu vertuschen, dass bei der Destillierung von Tequila etwas schief gegangen ist. Heute ist es einer der preiswertesten Orte in Ensenada um einen guten Tequila zu bekommen. Und wirklich sehr nah beim Schiff: wir können es von unserem Balkon aus sogar sehen. Wir werden direkt zum Schiff gebracht. Die Tour mit Mariana und Alejandro hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Und das nächstes Mal: Tortas, Taco mit Fisch, Bootsfahrt, um das Schiff zu fotografieren,... da gibt es bestimmt noch einiges, was sie uns zeigen können.



Just right in the building they had also Bar Andaluz. Here 1848 Margarita was invented. Actually, it was only to hide that something went wrong with the distillation of Tequila. Nowadays it was one of the cheapest places in Ensenada to get a good Tequila. And really close to the ship: we could even see it from our balcony. We were taken directly to the ship. The Tour by Miriana and Alejandra pleased us very much. And the next time: Tortas, Taco with fish, boat ride to take pictures of the ship... I am sure we found much more what they would show us.

Back onboard I had the impression that here everything became more silly. The guests should carry ping-pong-balls like penguins carry their egg between the legs. I felt like in the movie "Dirty Dancing". I was finding a calm place and some rest too. And in the evening the children birthday party would continue. Well, who liked it. It was not mine.



Zurück an Bord habe ich den Eindruck, dass das hier immer alberner wird. Sie sollen die Tischtennisbälle wie Pinguine die Eier zwischen den Beinen bewegen. Ich komme mir vor wie bei "Dirty Dancing". Ich suche mir eine ruhige Ecke und lege mich etwas hin. Und abends geht der Kindergeburtstag wohl weiter. Wer es mag. Meins ist es nicht.

We had a sneak view to the launderette. You need tokens. But the vending machine, which sold tokens, was out of order. We had luck and detergents of our own with us. Finally, information how much time one round of washing or drying would need.



Wir gucken uns mal im SB-Waschsalon um. Man braucht Wertmünzen. Aber die Maschine, die die Wertmünzen verkauft ist defekt. Wir haben zum Glück unser eigenes Waschmittel mit. Endlich ein Hinweis, wie lange die Wasch- und Trockengänge dauern.

Es geht zum Empfang der Platin- und Elite-Mitglieder des Captain's Circle. Ein paar Worte vom Kreuzfahrtdirektor Matt Barnard, Captain's Circle-Betreuerin Isla Wilson und vom Kapitän Diego Perra. Nette Canapés, die ich mag. Dieses Mal hat Frances nichts gewonnen. Hier komme ich immer wieder gerne hierher. Und ein Selfie mit dem Kapitän.



We went to the reception for Platinum and Elite-Members of the Captains's Circle. Few nice words from Cruise Director Matt Barnard, Captain's Circle-Hostess Isla Wilson and from Captain Diego Perra. Nice canapés which I liked. That time Frances did not win anything. An event I always loved to come. And a selfie with the Captain.

The very last time we went for the formal night: The food played a minor role tonight: instead of an adult lobster tail, you had three baby lobster tails... might be easier to serve some shrimps... they had the great ravioli... the bread rolls were delicious. But actually as said before: the food played tonight a minor role: at the end Marivic, Roland, and Dee were singing for us. Eating and enjoying which pleased us. Thanks so much to Edgar who was taking over the responsibility in the evening for Da Vinci and always allocated us to a lovely table: no drawers aside, no waiting time, no cold breeze. A beautiful day came to an end.



Es geht zum letzten formalen Abend: Das Essen spielt eigentlich heute Abend eine untergeordnete Rolle: Statt eines erwachsenen Hummerschwanz gibt es drei Kinder Hummerschwänze... hätte man ja auch gleich Shrimps servieren können... Es gibt die tollen Raviolis... Die Brötchenschnecken sind richtig gut. Aber eigentlich wie gesagt: das Essen spielt eine untergeordnete Rolle: denn am Schluss singen Marivic, Roland und Dede für uns. Essen und Genießen, das Spaß macht. Danke an Edgar, der uns abends, wenn er die Verantwortung für das Da Vinci übernimmt, immer einen tollen Tisch zuteilt: Ohne Schubladen an der Seite, ohne Wartezeiten, ohne Durchzug. Ein schöner Tag geht zu Ende.
