Breakfast. Somehow it was extremely chilly in the corner where we sat.



Frühstück. Es ist irgendwie besonders frisch in der Ecke, wo wir saßen.

Als wir das Schiff verlassen wollen, werden die Fahrstühle abgestellt.

Leider werden die Crew-Treppenhäuser nicht für die Öffentlichkeit in unserem Treppenhaus geöffnet, so dass wir zunächst ein anderes Treppenhaus uns suchen müssen.



Unfortunately, none of the crew-only staircases were opened for the public in our staircase, so we had to find another staircase.

I wanted to have the contact information of the port agent in San Diego, CA. They gave me the address of the of port authorities. I explained the difference between port authorities and port agent and I was told that they indeed knew the difference. I showed them at the front desk that you usually find the address of the port agent in the daily programme. They called the print shop to check: certainly none picked up the phone, and I should come back later. When I came back, then someone was smart enough to have a look into the computer as there were all addresses listed. Such a front desk with such incompetent agents could ruin the vacation of a guest.



Ich möchte die Kontaktdaten des Hafenagenten in San Diego haben. Mir wird die Anschrift der Hafenbehörden gegeben. Ich erkläre den Unterschied zwischen Hafenbehörden und Hafenagenten und man sagt mir, dass man durchaus den Unterschied kenne. Ich zeige denen an der Rezeption, dass die Kontaktdaten der Hafenagenten immer im Tagesprogramm eingedruckt sind. Sie rufen die Druckerei an, um nachzufragen: natürlich geht keiner ans Telefon und ich soll später wieder vorbei kommen. Als ich später wieder komme, ist doch jemand schlau genug einfach in den Computer zu gucken, da dort alle Anschriften drin stehen. So eine Rezeption kann ja schon mit unfähigen Mitarbeitern der Urlaub eines Passagieres ruinieren.

Man hat die Abfahrt ab Long Beach um zwei Stunden vorgezogen. Ursprünglich sollte die Ausfahrt um 23:00 Uhr stattfinden.

Willkommen im Cruise Terminal von Long Beach, das von keiner Hafenbehörde sondern von Carnival selbst betrieben wird. Deswegen: es ist schon toll gemacht.

Wir haben einen Wagen bei Enterprise Downtown Long Beach (Ocean Boulevard) bestellt. Wir rufen an, um nachzufragen, wie das mit der Abholung läuft. Mir wird mitgeteilt, dass vor 10:00 Uhr kein Platz für uns wäre. So machen wir uns so fertig, dass wir um 10:00 Uhr unten sind. Gebucht übrigens für 09:00 Uhr. Gegen 09:30 Uhr bekomme ich einen Anruf, dass man auf mich warten würde. Als wir unten sind: es wäre nur Platz für den Fahrer, der übernimmt. Alle anderen müssten warten. Die anderen dürfen ihre Begleiter mitnehmen. Das gibt einen ziemlichen Ärger später in der Filiale. Sie holen daher meine Gruppe auch ab, während ich den Papierkram erledige. Als Wiedergutmachung bekomme ich einen Pick-Up und darf noch ein paar Stunden deren Parkhaus nutzen. Einen Pick-Up wollte ich schon immer mal im Leben fahren. Außerdem brauche ich das Fahrzeug nicht betankt abzugeben. Allerdings hatte er sowieso nur 1/4 voll bei Übernahme und ein Pick-Up schluckt viel. So hat Sarah mich wieder beruhigt und ich bringe später sogar noch ein Basler Leckerlis vorbei.



We booked a car with Enterprise Downtown Long Beach (Ocean Boulevard). We called to ask how it would work with the pick-up. I was told that they would not have any availability before 10:00 hrs. So we managed to be downstairs at 10:00 hrs. By the way, the car was booked for 09:00 hrs. Around 09:30 hrs we got a call to let me know that they were waiting for me. When we came down, I was told that they had the capacity for the driver only who would take over the car. All others need to wait. Other customers weres were allowed to take their partners with them. That occurred some anger when I arrived at the branch office. So they sent someone to pick-up my group while I was doing the paperwork. As compensation, I got a pick-up and was allowed to stay for a few more hours in their parking. Once in life I always wanted to drive a pick-up. Furthermore no need to return the car with gas. But anyway the tank was full 1/4, and a pick-up is very fuel-consuming. So Sarah calmed me down and got them later some goodies from Switzerland.

We were close to the Waterfront. In the T-Mobile-Store, we bought further Tourist-SIM-cards. DDR was the abbreviation for GDR = East Germany. Did not know that GDR was still existing. I really loved to see and dine at Bubba Gump but I had other plans. The water taxis were not in operation yet.



Wir sind in der Nähe der Waterfront. An einem T-Mobile-Laden kaufen wir weiter Touristen-SIM-Karten. (Die) DDR gibt es wohl immer noch. An der Waterfront gibt es die üblichen Restaurants. Ich hätte ja schon Lust auf Bubba Gump, aber ich habe andere Pläne. Die Water Taxi fahren noch nicht.

Hafenrundfahrt mit Harbor Breeze Cruises: sofort müssen wir eine buchen. Wir genießen die Fahrt bei dem schönen Wetter. Ob wir tatsächlich eine Bildungsfahrt machen?

Selbstverständlich fahren wir an der QUEEN MARY vorbei, die ich perfekt fotografieren kann.

Und selbstverständlich fahren wir auch an der GRAND PRINCESS vorbei, die ich noch besser so fotografieren kann. Und später nochmals von der QUEEN MARY. Perfekter hätte der Tag nicht mehr werden können.



And certainly, we passed GRAND PRINCESS as well so I could take perfect pictures of. And later also from QUEEN MARY. The day could not become more perfect.

For lunch we went over to San Pedro to see the Fish Market for lunch. I liked it somehow there. It was a working day, so it was quite calm. You could buy fresh fish and ask them to prepare it for your wish, or you could buy freshly deep-fried fish. Later we had also a Mexican band playing music to entertain us during our meal.



Mittags fahren wir rüber nach San Pedro, um dort im Fischmarkt zu Mittag zu essen. Ich mag es dort irgendwie. Es ist nur ein Werktag und recht leer. Man kann sowohl frischen Fisch von der Theke kaufen sich dort zubereiten lassen oder man kann auch frisch-frittierten Fisch kaufen. Später bekommen wir sogar noch mexikanische Musik als Untermalung zum Essen.

Zurück in Long Beach gehen wir rüber zur QUEEN MARY. Jemand aus dem Roll-Call schrieb, dass man mit seiner Bordkarte rein darf. Jemand anders schrieb zurück, dass man es nicht mehr darf. Wir zeigen unsere Bordkarten und bekommen kostenlose Eintrittskarten ohne Führungen zugeteilt. Ich habe hier auf der QUEEN MARY 2008 übernachtet. Richtig gut fand ich es nicht. Damals gab es aber noch einen guten Cunard-Laden. Leider gibt es den nicht mehr. Alle Läden und Restaurants haben neue Betreiber. Nicht überall ist das Schiff mehr in einem guten Zustand, aber es gibt auch Stellen, bei denen wohl etwas gemacht wird, um Stellen auszubessern.



Back in Palm Beach we went over to QUEEN MARY. Someone from the roll-call wrote that you had free admission when you present your ship's card. Someone else wrote that you were not allowed anymore. We just presented our ship's card and received free admission without guided tours. I stayed here overnight on QUEEN MARY 2008. I could not say that I really liked it. Then they had a great Cunard-Store. Unfortunately, it did not exist anymore. All the stores and restaurants had new operators. Not everywhere the ship was in good condition but there were some places you could see that they were doing something to improve.

We went yet to the exhibition in the aft, and so we could enter the engine rooms. Here we had also "meetings" with the VIPs who also went on QUEEN MARY... like Audrey Hepburn. For me nothing was more perfect: Audrey Hepburn opposite on GRAND PRINCESS in Sabatini and Audrey Hepburn here on QUEEN MARY. Delightful was the presentation of the ship's screw.



Wir gehen noch zur Ausstellung im Heck und können daher in die Maschinenräume. Auch hier finden die "Begegnungen" mit den VIPs statt, die schon QUEEN MARY gefahren sind... U.a. Audrey Hepburn. Für mich gibt es nichts perfekteres: Audrey Hepburn drüben auf der GRAND PRINCESS im Sabatini und Audrey Hepburn hier auf der QUEEN MARY. Sehr schön ist die Präsentation der Schiffsschraube.

Wir haben ja schon öfters in einem Hafen das Schiff verlassen und dann wieder woanders zugestiegen: NORWEGIAN GEM 2009 Civitavecchia - Livorno, ZAANDAM 2012 Laem Chabang - Sihanoukville und sogar zwei Mal auf der NORWEGIAN SUN 2012 Bergen - Aalesund und Reykjavik - Greenock. Das war bisher immer außerhalb der USA. Aber in den USA gibt es besondere Regelungen und manchmal führt der vorzeitige Ausstieg zu Strafen, die die Kreuzfahrtgesellschaft 1:1 weitergibt. Mahesh hatte das für uns geklärt: wir dürfen in Long Beach aussteigen und wieder in San Diego zusteigen. Allerdings müssen wir eine Zollerklärung abgeben. So fahren wir auf der Autobahn Interstate I-5 nach San Diego und kommen wieder am Las Flores Aussichtspunkt vorbei, wie damals bei unserer Reise auf der CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2011. Hier kann man schön Vögel und das Meer beobachten.



Few times before, we left the ship in one port and rejoined in another port: NORWEGIAN GEM 2009 Civitavecchia, Italy - Livorno, Italy, ZAANDAM 2012 Laem Chabang, Thailand - Sihanoukville, Cambodia and even twice on NORWEGIAN SUN 2012 Bergen, Norway - Aalesund, Norway and Reykjavik, Iceland - Greenock, Ireland. That was so far outside the U.S. But within the U.S. there were special regulations that an early debarkation might occur penalties which the cruise line would recharge back to back. Mahesh checked the situation for us: we may debark in Long Beach, CA and rejoin the ship in San Diego, CA. But we need to fill out a Customs Declaration. So we went down on I-5 South to San Diego passed the vista point at Las Flores again like we did already on our voyage on CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2011. Here you could see the birds and the sea.

Due to our voyage on ZAANDAM 2012 we knew Rebecca who lived here right before we came to the U.S. for this voyage in San Diego but moved away: It was her, whom we had the recommendation to see a branch of Lucha Libre and try their food. As there was one branch in Carlsberg, CA too which was on the way from Long Beach to San Diego we dined there. Initially, I booked a Champions Table, but when I saw it I declined to have it, and we ate at a regular table. For us, it was fascinating to have food which we could not get in Germany. The lemonades which were not from the Coke or Pepsi companies were new to us. Very strange to us: the decoration with the masks which were from the wrestling activities.



Durch unsere Reise auf der ZAANDAM 2012 kennen wir Rebecca, die kurz vor unserem Aufenthalt in San Diego weggezogen ist: Von ihr haben wir den Tipp, dass wir eine Filiale von Lucha Libre ausprobieren sollen. Da in Carlsberg auch eine Filiale ist, die auf dem Weg von Long Beach nach San Diego liegt, essen wir dort. Ursprünglich habe ich den Champion Tisch bestellt, aber als ich ihn sehe, verzichte ich darauf und wir essen an einem ganz normalen Tisch. Für uns ist das schon interessant, weil wir so etwas in Deutschland nicht bekommen. Auch die Limonaden, die nicht aus dem Hause Coca-Cola oder Pepsi kommen, sind neu für uns. Sehr fremd für uns ist die Dekoration mit den ganzen Masken, die aus dem Wrestling stammen.

Da direkt daneben ein Macy's Kaufhaus ist, gehen wir dort noch schnell einkaufen. Allerdings merkt man den wirtschaftlichen Abstieg. Nichts ist sortiert und irgendwie ist die Stimmung der Belegschaft auf dem Boden. Freude am Einkaufen kenne ich anders.



Just next there was a Macy's Department Store where we went to make some purchases. But you could feel how it went down economically. Nothing was sorted, and somehow the atmosphere of the staff members was just on the ground. Having fun when you were shopping I knew totally different.

The only solace: we did not get a tourist discount card. Instead of that, we got a discount of 30% right at the register. But we noticed that it was worth to go shopping because we had the cut. Otherwise, the prices in Germany were more reasonable.



Einziger Trost: eine Rabattkarte Touristen bekommen wir nicht. Stattdessen wird 30% Rabatt an der Kasse abgezogen. Aber auch hier merken wir: nur mit dem Rabatt lohnt es sich überhaupt noch hier einzukaufen. Sonst sind die Preise in Deutschland durchaus günstiger.

Ein weiterer Grund für den Aufenthalt hier an Land: wir sind ja keine Elite-Mitglieder im Captain's Circle. Deswegen bekommen wir die Wäscherei nicht kostenlos.



Another reason to stay here ashore: we were no Elite-Members in the Captain's Circle, so we had no free laundry.

When I was then more frequently here, I made the acquaintance of services like Wash and Fold. This time I had unluck: many providers did not offer their services overnight or within a few hours. The third place we checked we had luck: Wash 'N Go was offering it.



Als ich früher beruflich öfters hier war, habe ich die Dienstleistung von Wash and Fold kennengelernt. Dieses Mal habe ich jedoch Pech: viele Anbieter bieten es nicht mehr über Nacht oder innerhalb weniger Stunden an. Beim dritten Anlauf haben wir Glück: Wash 'N Go bietet das an.

Leider habe ich den Namen von der charmanten Person auf dem Abholschein notiert, den ich später verloren habe. Sie verspricht mir, dass meine Wäsche noch so gemacht wird, dass ich am kommenden Tag es abholen kann. Später habe ich mit Hilfe von Facebook ihren Namen doch noch herausbekommen: Vielen Dank nochmals an Leslie.



Unfortunately I noted the name of the nice person on my ticket which I later lost. She promised that my laundry would be done so I could collect it the following day. Later with the help of Facebook, I found out her name: Thanks again to Leslie.

Right next door there was a Chinese snack-bar: City Dragon. Also, a habit from the time then when I was frequently in the USA: I loved to have in between an American Won-Ton-Soup and an American egg flower-soup. They were not really original Chinese style.



Direkt daneben ist eine chinesische Imbissstube: City Dragon. Auch eine Angewohnheit von der damaligen Zeit, als ich oft in den USA war: ich mag zwischendurch eine amerikanische Wan-Tan-Suppe und eine amerikanische Eierblumen-Suppe. Die sind zwar nicht richtig chinesisch.

Aber die beiden Suppen sind richtig gut.



But both soups were extremely good.

Primarily I was so surprised to find so many great ingredients in the Won-Ton-Soup like shrimps. Nothing which was standard.



Vor allem bin ich erstaunt, dass in dieser Wan-Tan-Suppe ganz tolle Zutaten wie Shrimps drin sind. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich.

Ein Grund, warum ich so bei der Rezeption gedrängelt am Vortag gedrängelt habe und nicht auf den Dienstplan des Immigration-Officers warten konnte: Ich hätte ggfls. mein Hotel am Vortag bis 16:00 Uhr stornieren müssen. Und daher brauchte ich sehr zeitnah eine Antwort. Das sind nun einmal sehr individuelle Probleme, die nicht so ganz typisch für einen Passagier einer Kreuzfahrt sind. Dennoch ist in der Regel die Rezeption für die Gäste da und nicht umgekehrt. Egal, welches Anliegen die Gäste haben. Aber zum Glück mussten wir ja nicht stornieren und genießen den Aufenthalt im Holiday Inn Bayside North, weil Mahesh sich meinen Problemen gestellt hat und mir rechtzeitig die Antworten beschafft hat. Wir bekommen ein sehr schönes Zimmer mit direktem Blick auf die Einfahrt der Schiffe, die San Diego anlaufen. Auch Bruno ist begeistert: es gibt ein sehr schnelles Internet im Hotel und es ist ein Paradies für Gäste wie uns, die viele Steckdosen brauchen. Vor allem haben sie sehr freundliches Personal an der Rezeption. Die Matratze ist klasse. Die Klimaanlage läuft auch gut. Wir schlafen wirklich erstklassig hier.



One reason why I made the pressure with the front desk the day before and could not wait for the working schedule of the immigration officer: I would need to cancel the hotel until 16:00 hrs of the day ahead. So I need a short-term answer. Those were individual problems which were not so typical for a cruise passenger. But the standard should be that the front desk was there for the guests and not vice versa. No matter which requests the guests had. But luckily we did not need to cancel and enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Inn Bayside North because Mahesh took my problems as his challenge and got me the answers right on time. We got a lovely room with a direct view of the incoming ships which were calling San Diego. And Bruno was excited too: they had high-speed internet in the hotel, and it was a paradise for guests like us who need a lot of power outlets. Especially they had very friendly agents at the front desk. The mattress was great. The air-conditioning was working well. We really slept fantastic here.
