Tag/Day 5 auf der/on GRAND PRINCESS in San Diego, CA

Jetzt sehen wir endlich unser Hotel bei Tageslicht. Alles richtig. Meine Punkte aus dem IHG Rewards Club sind gut eingesetzt: 0,00 USD. Obwohl ich direkt vom Zimmer aus die GRAND PRINCESS einfahren sehen könnte, ich will jedoch hautnah dabei sein.



Now finally could see our hotel on the day. Everything was correct. My points from my IHG Rewards Club were well used: 0.00 USD. Although I could see GRAND PRINCESS entering directly from my room, I wanted to experience up close.

I went to Shelter Island Shoreline Park.



Ich fahre zum Shelter Island Shoreline Park.

Und da kommt sie auch: GRAND PRINCESS. Wunderschön, wie sie einläuft. Wunderschön mit der Skyline von San Diego im Hintergrund. Und ich habe Frances auch erwischt.



And then she arrived: GRAND PRINCESS. Wonderful how she entered. Wonderful with the skyline of San Diego in the background. And I caught Frances.

Due to a report by Lufthansa on World Famous, we asked our friends in San Diego. Answer from Ken whom we knew from NORWEGIAN JADE 2011 (1): they had multiple locations, and we should look for a certain where we could have breakfast. That was what we did. And indeed: very lovely direct at the beach and not the same typical breakfast offer like in many other restaurants. Very nice: no more hash-browns automatically. You had the choice, and we took fruit salad. And it was different.



Aufgrund eines Artikels bei Lufthansa über World Famous, fragen wir bei unseren San Diego Freunden nach. Antwort von Ken, den wir von der NORWEGIAN JADE 2011 (1) kennen: sie sind wohl mehrfach vertreten und wir sollen einen bestimmten aufsuchen, bei dem wir frühstücken können. Das machen wir. Und in der Tat: sehr schön direkt am Strand und nicht das gleiche typische Frühstücks-Angebot, wie in vielen anderen Restaurants. Sehr schön: nicht mehr immer automatisch Bratkartoffeln. Man kann es sich selbst aussuchen and wir nehmen Obstsalat. Und es ist anders.

Uns ist es zu kalt. Am Strand wird gesurft und es gibt Unterricht. Bruno zeigt seinen Eltern über FaceTime, wie schön es hier ist.



It was too cold for us. They surfed at the beach, and they had lessons. Bruno showed on FaceTime how beautiful it was.

We went to the cruise terminal. Opposite they built a new Inter-Continental. We were just docking next to MIDWAY. The Holiday Inn was now a Wyndham Sand Diego Bayside and here we parked for a lot of money. They closed the parking right at the cruise terminal.



Wir fahren zum Cruise Terminal. Gegenüber entsteht ein neues Inter-Continental. Und wir liegen direkt neben der MIDWAY. Das Holiday Inn ist jetzt ein Wyndham San Diego Bayside und hier parken wir für viel Geld. Die Parkplätze direkt am Cruise Terminal sind gesperrt.

Wir gehen kurz an Bord, um unser Gepäck schon mal an Bord zu bringen.

Sieht immer noch aus, wie damals bei der CARNIVAL SPIRIT 2011.

And also from here, we would set sail earlier. Originally, it was scheduled to sail at 23:00 hrs. Now it was 22:00 hrs.



Auch hier fahren wir früher ab. Ursprünglich war 23:00 Uhr vorgesehen. Nun ist es 22:00 Uhr.

Und das ist Johnny. Der arme Kerl hatte immer uns erwischt, wenn etwas nicht stimmte: Karte geht nicht. Schon "ausgeschifft", damit wir abends nicht mitgezählt wurden. Aber immer freundlich und mit einem Lächeln.



And that was Johnny. The poor guy always had us when something went wrong: Card did not work. Already "disembarked" so none would count us in the evening. But always friendly and always with a smile.

And one more time GRAND PRINCESS at the pier.

Wir fahren zum Cabrillo National Denkmal. Frances und Eddie besitzen eine Dauerkarte für Senioren und so kommen wir kostenlos rein. Ein schöner Blick von hier. Und keine Busse von Princess.



We went to Cabrillo National Monument. Frances and Eddie had a lifetime pass for seniors so we could get it for free. A very nice view from here. And no buses from Princess.

We went over to the statue which stood here to honor Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He was the first European who discovered the West Coast of America in 1542.



Wir laufen rüber zur Statue, die zu Ehren von Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo hier steht. Er ist der erste Europäer, der 1542 die Westküste Amerikas entdeckt hat.

Und wir gehen kurz rüber zur Leuchtturmseite. Auf den Old Point Loma Leuchtturm hoch selbst können wir nicht. Von hier könnte man auch Wale beobachten.



And then we went over to the lighthouse-side. On the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, we could not go up. From here you could also watch whales.

The monument was in the middle of a military zone: on our navigation device, nothing was shown and stuck.



Das Denkmal liegt in Mitten einer militärischen Sperrzone: auf dem Navigationsgerät bleibt einfach alles stehen.

Ein Friedhof liegt auch am Transitbereich zwischen Denkmal und Stadt.



A cemetery was in the transit area between monument and town.

It looked quite impressive to us.



Das sieht schon beeindruckend aus.

Leider schalten wir zu spät die Luftzufuhr im Auto aus: nun wissen wir wie ein totes Stinktier riecht.



Unfortunately, we closed to late the ventilation of the car: now we learned how a skunk was smelling.

We made a brief stop at Jensen's Food to have a quick bite for lunch.



Wir halten kurz bei Jensen's Food, um einen Kleinigkeit zu Mittag zu essen.

Hier wird für lokale Produkte geworben.



Here they advertised for local products.

Such an Asian rice bowl with chicken and vegetable was precisely the right item for me.



So eine asiatische Reisschüssel mit Hühnchen und Gemüse ist genau das richtige für mich.

Auch muss ich diese Pita Chips von Baba Foods kaufen.



Also, I need to buy Pita Chips from Baba Foods.

We went just next door to Peet's Café to have a cup of coffee and some of us to have some dessert too.



Wir gehen noch nebenan zu Peet's Café, um einen Kaffee zu trinken und einige nehmen auch einen Nachtisch.

Meinen Hunger nach Dessert hebe ich mir für das nächste Café auf: 85°C Bakery Café. Sehr chinesisch. Sehr lecker. So wie ich es mag.

We went to collect our laundry with Wash N' Go. As promised everything was ready. Even Frances was surprised how soft the laundry was and how nice it was smelling.



Wir fahren unsere Wäsche bei Wash 'N Go abholen. Wie versprochen ist alles fertig. Und sogar Frances staunt, wie weich die Wäsche ist und wie schön sie duftet.

Ich muss das ganze wieder an Bord bringen.

We returned the car with Enterprise in Little Italy.



Wir bringen den Wagen zu Enterprise in Little Italy zurück.

Wie versprochen wurde einiges am Preis angepasst, weil die Abholung in Long Beach ziemlich chaotisch lief.



As promised some items of the rate were adjusted because the collection in Long Beach, CA was a little chaotic.

The station manager found it somehow unusual that we should return empty to empty and we should get as compensation an half tank full of gas when we rent again.



Der Stationsmanager findet das schon ungewöhnlich, dass wir leer auf leer zurückbringen sollen und als kleine Kompensation sollen wir bei der nächsten Anmietung einen halben Tank bekommen.

Mit einem großen Van geht es zurück zum Schiff: also kein Drama wie bei der Übernahme. Da kamen sie gerade mal mit einem 7-Sitzer.



We got back to the ship in a large van: not a drama like with the collection. They came with a 7-seater.

So we went back tot he ship.



So fahren wir zurück auf das Schiff.

Ich ziehe nochmals los, weil ich ein paar Bilder drucken lassen möchte. Hier in der Nähe gibt es den Bahnhof, aber eigentlich sonst nichts.



I started again because I wanted some pictures to be printed. Here close by you had a train station but there was nothing more around.

With the tram of MTS, I went to the downtown area with all the shopping possibilities. By tram, I could get to the Mexican border. I am used from Basle, Switzerland that one route connects you with France and one with Germany. There were no discounts. It was 2.50 USD (2018) for a single ride.



Mit der Straßenbahn der MTS fahre ich in das Stadtzentrum mit den Geschäften. Mit der Straßenbahn käme ich auch zur mexikanischen Grenze. Ich bin aus Basel gewohnt, dass eine Linie nach Frankreich fährt und eine Linie nach Deutschland. Eine Vergünstigung gibt es nicht. 2,50 USD (2018) kostet eine einfache Fahrt.

Bei einem CVS lasse ich Bilder für die Truppe aus dem Sabatini drucken. Einige Bilder über die schönen Seiten der GRAND PRINCESS drucke ich auch für den Hotel General Manager aus.

Die Erinnerung, dass wir einen Tisch heute Abend im Crown Grill haben.



The reminder that we had a table that night in the Crown Grill.

Und es kommt auch die Einladung zum Empfang der Captain's Circle Platin- und Elite-Mitglieder.

Wir haben noch eine Touristen-SIM-Karte besorgt und geben sie an Bord weiter, als besonderen Bonus für einen tollen Service.



We bought another Tourist-SIM-card and handed it over onboard, as a special bonus for a great service.

It was great to experience how they change the programme over the cruise.



Es ist schon klasse, wie hier das Programm immer wieder während der Kreuzfahrt wechselt.

Es geht in den Crown Grill. Das nächste Mal würde ich mich einfach hier auch eher auf das Sabatini konzentrieren. Schon alleine, weil es hier keine Audrey Hepburn gibt. Am Schluss müssen wir auch noch die lokale Steuer von San Diego auf die Zuzahlungen zahlen.



We went to the Crown Grill. The night time I would simply concentrate on Sabatini. There was no Audrey Hepburn around. Finally, we also had to pay the local San Diego tax on the cover charge.

And then it was time to say Good-Bye San Diego. I quickly booked a pass on T-Mobile to have pictures transferred, but there was no LTE-network available for a more extended period. It changed soon to the 4G-network. And the next day I could not continue to use the pass because Mexico was part of a different country group but the USA. After I received my final bill, I complained and got a refund by T-Mobile.



Und dann heißt es auch schon Good-Bye San Diego. Ich buche noch schnell einen Pass von Telekom, um während der Ausfahrt Bilder zu übertragen, aber lange gibt es kein LTE-Netz, sondern er schaltet schnell auf 4G-Netz um. Und am nächsten Tag kann ich den Pass nicht weiternutzen, weil Mexiko zu einer anderen Ländergruppe gehört, als die USA. Ich reklamiere nach Eingang meiner Rechnung und erhalte eine Erstattung von Telekom.
