Wir gucken uns das Frühstück an.

 border=0

We checked the breakfast.

Overnight they must have moved the remainder of our yesterday's breakfast from there to here.

 border=0

 border=0

It looked very familiar to us.

Next door there was a Denny's. At least they prepared the eggs freshly.

 border=0

 border=0

And indeed: in the US the nutritional awareness changed too: you did not have only the melons in a fruit salad but also bananas and strawberries. And my sandwich was also prepared freshly. They formed from eggs whatever I wanted.

We were also in Stockton because here it was a right place of origin: South was the Tioga Road through Yosemite National Park or North via Sonora Pass. Unfortunately, we had to destroy our hopes: still too much snow that it would make any sense. For the next time, we would remind this bus service YARTS. You must not drive yourself. Sonora Pass was open. Otherwise, we need to go via Lake Tahoe. It was now like our journey to join MSC MAGNIFICA 2017: the Grand Bernhard was closed, and we had to go to Simplon. It was not just the parallel road one block away but a detour which took additionally 2-3 hours more driving time. The Tioga Road opened finally on May 21, 2018. At that time we were already back at our working desks. Since 1980 the earliest opening was April 29, and the latest was July 01 - i.e., if you were planning such a tour you also a plan B or here a plan C. All hotels were the selection that it would work with plans A, B and C.

The landscape was lovely, diversified, impressive... but it became slowly a little too much, and somehow it became monotonous. Because a beautiful section was not 2-3 miles but 20-30 mines. You were not allowed to drive as fast as in Germany. But that would not help anyway. Road construction was different. You formed more following the form of nature. So you could not drive so fast. So it dragged a while. Endless. Everything that was around the corner was like a ride from Hamburg, Germany to Munich, Germany.

In Jamestown, CA, we made a brief stop. A typical American small town. The traffic was directed meanwhile via a by-pass road. For fun, you could pan for gold.

In an antiques shop they had also a coffee corner. They had here a barista coffee machine. But somehow the manual guide was only available in Italian or in Chinese. And again in paper cups. I would really love to try a cola which was not from Coke or from Pepsi but here you could only buy historic bottles as antiques.

Heading for the Sonora Pass. What should I do there? Looked almost like in Switzerland... but only approximately... If you linked California only with Sun and Beach, you had to learn that you had an opposite piece of California too.

Auf geht es über den Sonora Pass. Was soll ich hier?

After many years I bought again a paper map of the Stanislaus National Forest. You noticed that the Trump-Administration need money: 15.00 USD!!! And 2017!!! Well - hopefully, there was not changed so much in the last year. The National Park administration is part of Department of Homeland Security. In National Parks, no economic use was allowed. We were in a National Forest. It is part of the Department of Agriculture. A limited economic use was possible.

Searching for a restaurant, we were sent by rangers to Pinecrest. It was located very nicely at sea. There was absolutely no mobile phone signal, so the payphone still made sense. We could buy here stamps. We could buy accessories for fishers. They had here a little convenience store camping guests. But no restaurant which was open. Not until tonight.

 border=0

So we continued to drive to the next settlement. Here there was a restaurant. Closed on Tuesdays. It was Tuesday. The opposite was again a mini-convenience store, which did not allow you to see the restroom. The next was 20 miles away.

Reminded very much to "Strawberry Fields" of the Beatles. Somehow the time stood still.

 border=0

 border=0

Right at the parking there was a nice mountain creek.

Looked somehow similar on both sides of the bridge.

 border=0

 border=0

At least we bought a pre-manufactured bad tasting convenience sandwich.

Latest when we arrived at Donnell Vista (20 miles away from the last stop... toilets... but not WC... best would be to take a six-pack of Immodium...) it did not make any difference that we did not go through the Yosemite National Park. No idea if it would be there more beautiful and what we might miss. I would not say anyway to see all the beautiful places on earth. But here it was also lovely.

In which not every vista point on our way was same beautiful and interesting. The Columns of the Giants were for sure interesting for those who like to walk few hours. We had to head on.

We were in the next National Forest: Humboldt-Toiyabe. And here again at the Leavitt Falls: without the status as Nation Park, it also cute here.

Actually it looked like in the Alps. Why did we come here? Somehow it made more fun to drive through the Alps... you come at a point to the end... Here I had the impression I would never come to an end.

In the middle of our way a single-lane traffic regulation. You could easily control it with the help of intelligent traffic signals... somehow I felt sorry for the man who did his job here by holding the stop-sign in the intense sunshine. So you had to drive behind a pilot. They did not secure the construction site (multiple miles long) so that only the pilot knew where he had to change the lane.

We arrived in Bridgeport, CA. Civilization, LTE-network, toilets with water flush. And finally, something reasonable to eat in the Bridgeport Inn. And as usual in the USA: you get again the same exact food you could get in other restaurants too. Mostly it was convenience: canned tangerines. Won-Ton-Chips from the Asia-Supermarket. So you made from every green tossed salad an Asia Salad. In which I need to say: my pastrami sandwich was good.

Around Mono City, we could see the very first time the Mono Lake.

The City of Los Angeles, CA took a lease as water extraction area. About 340 miles / 5.5 hours driving time away! I was shocked how much water was taken by Los Angeles. The marks of the past level of water were very impressive to me. Same as the rock formations. I contributed a small amount to save the natural landscape.

Mono Basin Visitor Center - unfortunately, it was already closed.

 border=0

Mono Basin Visitor Center - leider schon geschlossen.

Wir sehen uns trotzdem draußen um.

 border=0

Nevertheless we looked around outside.

And we took a few more pictures.

 border=0

Und machen noch einige Fotos.

Interessant, wie sich hier die Pflanzenwelt verändert.

 border=0

Interesting to see how the world of plants was changing.

We did not go on the direct way to Mammoth Lakes but a small detour around the June Lake back to the Main Road. We could also see a waterfall.

The next we arrived, was the Best Western Plus High Sierra Hotel in Mammoth Lakes. Somehow you could notice that you were not on a cruise ship anymore. We should better rely on the rule: better pre-cruise but post-cruise. But the chance to get through Yosemite National Park would be much smaller.

Due to the recommendation of the hotel and supplied with four coupons we went across to Slocums. But they only wanted to honor one coupon. We were too tired to find another restaurant and leave again. It was o.k. Something was quite reasonable in the US. After the most extended lag of our journey, we were happy that we could go to bed.
