We looked for something, what had open. Not always trustworthy. Or closed. We were in Nevada. Even you had gambling machines in the gas station.



Wir suchen etwas, das auf hat. Nicht immer vertrauenserweckend. Oder geschlossen. Wir sind in Nevada. Sogar in der Tankstelle stehen Spielautomaten.

Again back in the Death Valley National Park.



Wieder zurück in den Death Valley National Park.

Zunächst halten wir an einer Geisterstadt Harmony Borax Works. Hier wurde früher Borax (= Weißes Gold) abgebaut.



First, wie stopped again at a ghost city Harmony Borax Works. Here was a former Borax (= White Gold) mine.

We headed for the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. I liked it! Even the cars were protected. In the toilets, you find sheets, how the urine should be colored. A lot of great information. Many records of the US at one spot: Heat 134° F, Dryness (less than 2" precipitation per year), Depth (282' below sea level). A great film was shown. When we arrived the temperature varied between 99° F and 100° F. Here we repurchased a DVD.



Weiter geht es in das Furnace Creek Besucherzentrum. Das gefällt mir gut! Sogar die Autos werden geschützt. In den Toiletten gibt es Tabellen, wie der Urin gefärbt sein sollte. Viele tolle Informationen. Viele Rekorde der USA an einem Fleck: Hitze 134° F (57° C), Trockenheit (weniger als 2" (51 mm) Niederschlag im gesamten Jahr), Tiefe (282' (86 m) unter dem Meeresspiegel). Ein toller Film läuft. Als wir ankommen schwankt die Temperatur zwischen 99° F und 100° F (37° C-38° C). Hier kaufen wir wieder eine DVD.

In einer Indianer Siedlung des Stamms der Timbisha Shoshone machen wir schnell einen Stopp: Wir denken, dass indianisches Shaved Ice angeboten wird, aber es wird hawai'ianisches Shaved Ice verkauft. Das Schild haben wir wohl falsch verstanden: Indian Taco Shaved Ice. Das Indian bezieht sich also nur auf den Taco. Ich probiere die indianische Version eines ungarischen Langos.



In an Indian Settlement of the Timbisha Shoshone tribe we made a quick stop: We thought that Indian Shaved Ice was offered, but it was only Hawai'ian Shaved Ice sold. We misunderstood obviously the sign: Indian Taco Shaved Ice. The Indian was related to the Taco. I tried the Indian version of the Hungarian Langos.

Occasionally we also left the car and did not know if it was worth or not. Just, it was mostly too hot, to find it out. Like here too: only a few steps we were walking before we wanted to be back in the air-conditioned car.



Manchmal steigen wir auch aus, und wissen nicht so Recht, ob es sich lohnt oder nicht lohnt. Es ist jedoch einfach, oft zu heiß, um das festzustellen. Wie hier auch: es bleibt bei wenigen Schritten, bis dass wir wieder zurück ins klimatisierte Auto wollen.

Dann kommt etwas: Besichtigung auf amerikanischer Art. Wenn man ernsthaft wollte, konnte man so im Auto sitzen bleiben und bei der der Farbpalette des Künstlers, eigentlich von Parkplatz zu Parkplatz fahren und auch nicht aussteigen. Wir steigen aber zumindest aus, um mal kurz zu fotografieren. Das ganze ist als kilometerlange Einbahnstraße eingerichtet, so dass man sich immer nur auf eine Fahrtrichtung beim Fahren konzentrieren muss.



Something different came: sightseeing American style. If you really wanted seriously, you could simply sit in your car with the Artist's Palette and go from parking to parking and not leaving the car. We left the car actually, to make a few photos. It was set up as miles-long one-way-road, so only need to concentrate on one direction of drive.

At Zabrieski Point, we also found out again: if someone could set up a perfect observation point, it would be the Americans. Nobody else could form a viewpoint where everybody could see well and a lot. Designed for handicapped without steps.



Bei Zabrieski Point stellen wir auch wieder fest: wenn jemand perfekt einen Aussichtspunkt anlegen kann, dann die Amerikaner. So perfekt kann man sonst keinen Aussichtspunkt anlegen, dass viele gut sehen können und man auch vieles sieht. Behindertengerecht ohne Stufen.

Eine Oase mitten in der Wüste: ein etwas vornehmeres Hotel und Restaurant mitten in der Wüste im Stil eines englischen Countryclubs. Zugang durch einen Tunnel mit Fahrstuhl nach oben. Nur kein vernünftiges Internet. Sonst eine perfekte Oase sogar mit Stoffhandtüchern in den Toiletten. Auf der Terrasse des Inn at Death Valley wäre man auch kühl eingenebelt worden. Wobei ich mir nicht sicher bin: ist es für die Gäste oder für die Blumen. Für ein quasi Monopol, ist das Essen und der Service gar nicht so überteuert und es ist auch gut.



An oasis in the middle of the desert: a more elegant hotel and restaurant in the middle of the desert in English Country Club style. Access through a tunnel with an elevator upwards. But no reasonable internet. Apart from that, it was the perfect oasis as you can find textile towels in the toilets. On the terrace of the Inn at Death Valley, they sprayed a cold mist. I was not sure: was that more for the guests or for the flowers. For a so-to-say monopoly, the food and the service were not overpriced, and it was good too.

Natural Bridge Canyon counted to the places which were worth to see, but not when you had those temperatures. Primarily, when the road was not paved, and we could only drive in walking speed. That meant that the air-condition of the car went off because there was enough electric power was produced. When we could go later faster on the road again, the cooling in the car started again.



Natural Bridge Canyon gehört auch zu den Orten, die bestimmt sehenswert sind, aber nicht bei den Temperaturen. Zumal die Straße unbefestigt ist und wir nur im Schneckentempo fahren können. Das bedeutet auch, dass die Klimananlage im Auto aussetzt, weil wir nicht genug Strom erzeugen. Sobald wir aber zum Glück wieder schneller auf der Straße fahren, setzt die Kühlung im Auto wieder ein.

Das Badwater Basin ist der tiefste Punkt Nordamerikas. Man sollte sicherlich einmal im Leben hier gewesen sein. Nur muss es nicht mehr Anfang Mai bei 38° C sein. Das alleine mal zu sehen, ist sehr beeindruckend.



The Badwater Basin was the deepest point in Northern America. You should be here once in your lifetime. But no need to be here when you had 100° F in early May again. Just to see that was quite impressive.

As lovely as it was here - and everything was really worth to see: it was terrible that you need again hours to get back into civilization. On our way, I saw a rock formation which reminded me of a personality in the public life...



So schön wie alles hier ist - und es ist wirklich auch alles sehr sehenswert: so schrecklich ist es, dass wir jetzt wieder Stunden brauchen, um hier in die Zivilisation zurückzugelangen. Unterwegs sehe ich eine Felsformation, die mich an eine Persönlichkeit des öffentlichen Lebens erinnert...

In Shoshone machen wir eine Pause. Mitten in der Wüste und es gibt ein Postamt, das leider geschlossen hatte.



In Shoshone, CA, we made a break. In the middle of the desert and they had a post office, which was unfortunately closed.

We had our break in the Crowbar. I was happy to have an iced coffee. Only the cherry pie was not sweet enough. It was too sour.



Wir machen Pause in der Crowbar. Ich bin glücklich mit meinem geeisten Kaffee. Nur der Kirschkuchen ist mir nicht süß genug. Viel zu sauer.

Es geht dann weiter nach Nevada. Irgendwie sieht alles wie ein großer Marmorkuchen aus.



We headed for Nevada. Somehow, it looked all like a giant marble cake.

In Pahrump, NV, we went again to fill up. Much cheaper than in California.



In Pahrump, Nevada gehen wir tanken. Sehr viel billiger als in Kalifornien.

Auf dem Weg nach Las Vegas, liegt vor den Toren von Las Vegas die Red Rock Canyon National Conversation Area. Also weder ein Nationalpark noch ein Nationalwald. Bevor wir die Zufahrt erreichen, gibt es jedoch bereits einen frei zugänglichen Aussichtspunkt. Auch sehr beliebt als Fotomotiv für Hochzeitspaare.



On the way to Las Vegas, NV, you could find at the entrance of Las Vegas the Red Rock Canyon National Conversation Area. So it was neither National Park nor National Forest. Before we could reach the gate, we could find an openly accessible vista point. Also quite popular as photo motive for wedding couples.

Although it was no National Park: the pass of Eddie and Frances was accepted. It was set up as a very long one-way road. From time to time when you had something special, what you had to see, you always found a parking.



Obwohl kein Nationalpark: Der Ausweis von Eddie und Frances wird anerkannt. Es ist als ewig lange Einbahnstraße eingerichtet. Von Zeit zu Zeit gibt es bei Besonderheiten, die man gesehen haben sollte, immer ein Parkplatz.

Wir steigen aus und klettern auch ein wenig rum. Auch hier wird eine Braut in dramatischen Szenen fotografiert. Es sieht aber eher nach Scheidung als nach Hochzeit aus.



We got off and climbed also a little around. Here as well, someone took pictures of a bride in dramatic scenes. It looked more like divorce but marriage.

The next parking looked similar to the previous parking. Some were only provided that one could head on by car and collect other people who hiked to this place from the last parking along the red rocks.



Am nächsten Parkplatz sieht es eigentlich fast genauso aus, wie am Vorigen. Einige dienen aber auch nur dazu, dass jemand mit dem Auto weiterfahren kann, um hier Leute einzusammeln, die vom letzten Parkplatz entlang der roten Felsen gewandert sind.

Immer noch bin ich schwer beeindruckt.

We were in the vicinity of Las Vegas. Unbelievable.



Wir befinden uns im Stadtgebiet der Stadt Las Vegas. Kaum zu glauben.

Im Hintergrund ist schon die Skyline von Las Vegas zu sehen.

Although we could not become friends with every single rock: no way only to see red.



Obwohl nicht mit jedem Stein persönlich Freundschaft schließen können: wir sehen nicht nur rot.

Wieder Zeit zum Aussteigen.



Time again to get off.

The internet allowed it that we must not buy any books anymore but just to copy the QR-Codes to read later everything when we were back at home. On one parking we could see the width of the attraction very well. Also, the sun which was setting was promising nice plays of lights. Even from here: very nice the background of Las Vegas.



Das Internet macht es möglich, dass wir keine Bücher kaufen müssen, sondern nur den QR-Code kopieren müssen, um später alles zu Hause in Ruhe nachzulesen. Auf einem Parkplatz lässt sich einfach die Weite der Attraktion gut übersehen. Auch die untergehende Sonne verspricht tolle Lichterspiele. Und auch von hier sehen wir im Hintergrund Las Vegas.

Der nächste Marmorkuchen.

The place was worth to see and who might stay in Las Vegas and might not have the time to see the more massive National Parks Grand Canyon or Death Valley, could experience here a “smaller” natural landscape.



Der Ort ist auf jeden sehenswert, und wer vielleicht nur in Las Vegas weilt und keine Zeit für die großen Nationalsparks Grand Canyon oder Death Valley hat, kann hier doch ein „kleines“ Stück Naturlandschaft erleben.

Wir sind auch nur hier, weil Elton John ausgerechnet heute seinen Ruhetag hat. Ich hatte extra Celine Dion in der Schweiz nicht angeguckt, um sie hier zu sehen, aber hier tritt sie erst wieder auf, wenn wir wieder weg sind. Und ihre Urlaubsvertretung ist Elton John, der heute nicht spielt. Schade. Morgen können wir leider nicht.



We were only here because Elton John had just his rest day. I missed Celine Dion intentionally in Switzerland, to see her here, but she would perform again after we left. And her vacation substitution was Elton John, who was not playing that day. Sad. The next day, it was impossible for us to see him.

Due to my membership with the IHG Rewards Club and the sufficiently required points, we could stay in The Venetian or The Palazzo. I wanted to use actually cash+points but it did work with this hotel. The agents in the call-centers could not help. They let me feel that I was too stupid that I could handle it myself. But they could not manage it either to make my booking. Also, The Venetian could not help. I had to write to a very high position in the IHG group. They solved the problem to my full satisfactory, and now they had a super-loyal customer more. On top, you need to pay a resort fee when you used your points. Although Eddie and Frances were not staying with us in The Venetian, they could let their car here free of charge. As IHG Reward Club members we had a front desk of our own, so there was no need to wait a long time. We were anyway not able to say something at the front desk: we were merely very speechless. Although I saw that already in Macao, China during our voyage on ZAANDAM 2012.



Durch meine Mitgliedschaft im IHG Rewards Club und der ausreichenden Punktzahl können wir in The Venetian bzw. The Palazzo übernachten. Ich will eigentlich Cash+Points nutzen, aber das klappt ausgerechnet bei dem Hotel nicht. Die Mitarbeiter in den Call-Centern können mir nicht helfen. Einerseits erklären sie mich für zu blöd, dass ich es selbst hinbekomme. Und andererseits schaffen sie es selbst auch nicht, mich dafür einzubuchen. Auch The Venetian schafft es nicht. Daher musste ich mal an höherer Stelle im IHG Kozern schreiben. Die haben das dann sehr zu meiner Zufriedenheit gelöst und haben jetzt einen superloyalen Kunden mehr. Man muss allerdings eine Resort-Gebühr zahlen, wenn man seine Punkte einsetzt. Obwohl Eddie und Frances gar nicht bei uns in The Venetian wohnen, bieten sie uns an, deren Auto trotzdem kostenlos bei sich einzustellen. Wir haben als IHG Reward Club-Mitglieder einen eigenen Empfang, so dass wir nicht lange warten müssen. Viel sagen können wir an der Rezeption eh nicht: wir sind nämlich ziemlich sprachlos. Obwohl ich das ja schon mal alles in Macau gesehen hatte: damals auf der ZAANDAM 2012-Reise.

Wir bekommen eine schöne Suite als Upgrade. Wir müssen nicht extra erläutern: der Weg zum Zimmer führte natürlich quer durch das Casino und an Sicherheitskontrollen vorbei.

Nach dem Atomic Inn, habe ich allerdings keine Probleme diese Hotelzimmer für mich zu akzeptieren.



After the Atomic Inn, I had no problems to accept this hotel room for me.

Many details, which made our life more comfortable, and for them, we need a manual to understand how to use them.



Viele Details, die einem das Leben erleichtern, und für die wir eine Gebrauchsanleitung brauchen.

Das Badezimmer ist wirklich sehr nett gestaltet.



The bathroom was really nicely designed.

Somehow I felt sorry for the chambermaid.



Irgendwie tut mir ja das Zimmermädchen schon leid.

Uns gefällt es trotzdem, auch wenn es ein wenig überladen und kitschig ist.



But we liked it, although it might be a little overloaded and kitchy.

Even the toilet was hidden behind a door and from you could have your seatings and holding phone conferences.



Sogar die Toilette ist separat hinter einer Tür versteckt und von dort kann ich meine Sitzungen halten und Telefonkonferenzen führen.

The Palazzo ist direkt neben an und die Hotels sind miteinander verbunden. Sowohl physisch als auch wirtschaftlich.



The Palazzo was right next building and the hotels were connected to each other. Either physically as economically too.

The Spa area was by Canyon Ranch. Not like on QUEEN MARY 2 2017.

Und da im Hintergrund können wir rüber zu Trump gucken.

We were hungry, and we wanted to find the right exit for our tour the next morning. We saw in the building complex one of the food courts. We stopped with Wasabi Jane's.

Es schmeckt nicht sehr asiatisch.

Auch die Dim Sum schmecken eher amerikanisch-chinesisch... aber das ist nicht schlimmer, als schweizerisch-chinesisch.



The Dim Sum also tasted more American-Chinese... but it was not worse than Swiss-Chinese.

Our meeting point for the next morning, we could not find so fast. With the arrival at the hotel, Bruno regretted that we would not make our 10,000 daily steps. When we checked at the check-in, it was 8,000 steps. Now after one-hour searching, we had now more than 14,000 steps behind us. We would take another time, to look around. For the first idea, it was enough. The feet hurt. And the next morning, we need to start very early.



Unseren Treffpunkt für morgen früh, haben wir so schnell nicht gefunden. Bei Ankunft im Hotel hat Bruno bedauert, dass wir wohl heute nicht die 10.000 täglichen Schritte schaffen. Das war beim Check-In: 8.000 Schritte. Nun nach einer Stunde suchen, haben wir jetzt 14.000 Schritte hinter uns. Das gucken wir uns ein anderes Mal in Ruhe an. Für den ersten Eindruck reicht es. Die Füße tun weh. Und wir müssen morgen früh sehr früh raus.
