Tag/Day 12.2 nach der/after OCEAN PRINCESS in Bath - Slough - London, England

Nach dem wir ja nun wussten, dass die Queen grundsätzlich im Sommer in Balmoral verweilt, hatte keiner Interesse Schloss Windsor zu besuchen. Wozu sollen wir dort ein Tässchen Tee trinken, wenn sie nicht da ist. Aber Frances ist neugierig, ob sie nun ohne Koffer zurückfliegen muss.



After we knew that the Queen stayed all summer long in Balmoral, Scotland, none of us were interested to see Windsor Castle. Why should we have a cup of tea there if she was not here? But Frances was curious to know if she now needs to fly back home without a bag.

No - her bag made it right on time: Superb service of Carry My Bag. The executive service provider was DHL. Me as a head of logistics "missed" (I was on vacation) to print out the waybill and to add. But we booked so short-notice when we were already on the way to Dover, England. But DHL was really great and made a print out at their station.



Nein - ihr Gepäck hat es pünktlich geschafft: Super Service von Carry My Bag. Der ausführende Dienstleister ist DHL. Ich hatte als Logistik-Leiter "versäumt" (ICH BIN IM URLAUB!) den Frachtbrief auszudrucken und mitzugeben. Allerdings weil wir so kurzfristig an einem Wochenende gebucht hatten, kamen sie erst nach dem wir schon längst in Dover weg waren. Aber DHL war so super gewesen hat sie dann auf der Station manuell versendet.

Wir sind im Holiday Inn Express Slough. Für einen Logistiker erfüllte es alle Kritierien, die wichtig waren: es war günstig, ich bekomme meine IHG Rewards Punkte, das Frühstück ist inkludiert, sie haben auch Zweibettzimmer, es liegt direkt an einem Bahnhof mit Direktverbindungen nach London und für 19,00 GBP (2015) kommt man zum Flughafen Heathrow.



We were in the Holiday Inn Express Slough. For a logistics man it fulfilled all criteria which were important: it was cheap, I got my IHG Reward Points, the breakfast was included, they also had twin rooms, it was located directly at a train station with direct connections to London, and for 19.00 GBP (2015) you could get simply to Heathrow Airport.

Wichtig ist: einmal aus dem Hotel raus und über den Parkplatz laufen und schon hat man den Bahnhof Slough erreicht.



Important was: just simply out of the hotel, crossing over the parking and reaching Slough station.

Agatha Christie's "Murder She said" title in German is "16:50 hrs Paddington Station"... But we were too early. Greetings from Miss Marple. The ride took only 20 minutes. But it was rush-hour, and the train was very full. It was recommendable to book earlier than one hour ahead of departure on National Rail to buy cheaper tickets. At the PC we learned we just missed the pre-booking period of one hour and at the station, you could not buy discounted tickets.



Mist: wir sind zu früh: 16.50 Uhr Paddington Station... Miss Marple lässt grüßen. Die Fahrt dauert nur etwa 20 Minuten. Allerdings ist Rush Hour und die Züge sehr voll. Es empfiehlt sich auch über National Rail die Tickets frühzeitiger als eine Stunde zu buchen, wenn man günstiger fahren will. Am PC haben wir festgestellt, dass wir die Vorverkaufsfrist von einer Stunde gerade überschritten hatten und am Bahnhof haben wir dann erfahren, dass es diese am Automaten nicht gibt.

Schneller hätte ich mit unserem Auto nicht nach London kommen können und hätte auch die Congestion Fee (City Maut) entrichten müssen. Und einen Parkplatz finden usw. usw.

We just merely missed Miss Marple who departed here 11 minutes before.



Wir haben gerade Miss Marple verpasst, die vor 11 Minuten hier abgefahren ist...

Dafür gehen wir den Paddington Bär begrüßen. Ich habe meinen Selfie-Stick nicht mit.

And my Hurtigruten-Sydvester I did not have with me either. No - sorry: a Dufflecoat did not fit me.



Und meinen Sydvester von Hurtigruten habe ich auch nicht mit. Nein - sorry: ein Dufflecoat steht mir leider nicht.

Willkommen in London. Ich denke, dass es zu einer ersten Reise rund um Großbritannien irgendwie dazu gehört.



Welcome to London, England. I thought it must be part of a around-the-British-Isle-voyage.

Actually, we received some excellent recommendations. But nothing was in walking distance of Paddington Station. I thought all Chineses must be reasonable in England. But that was wrong. Again a restaurant which top-up service charges for missing service and missing good food. But neither the Chinese offer was good nor the Korean. And somehow it did not taste real, and it was better to see and pay the toilet in Paddington Station.



Eigentlich hatten wir sehr gute Empfehlungen ausgesprochen bekommen. Nur leider war nichts fußläufig davon vom Bahnhof Paddington erreichbar. In London dachte ich immer müssen irgendwie alle Chinesen gut sein. Aber das war ein Trugschluss. Wieder ein Lokal das sich lieber für fehlenden Service und fehlendem guten Essen selbst das Trinkgeld schon selbst aufschlägt. Weder war das chinesische Angebot sehr umwerfend noch das koranische. Und irgendwie geschmeckt hat es auch nicht richtig und auf die Toilette gehe ich dann doch lieber im Bahnhof Paddington und zahle dafür.

Unser Wagen kommt. Unsere Reiseführerin kommt. So wie abgesprochen. Es passte sehr gut, dass wir ausgerechnet in Paddington angekommen sind, weil sie in der Nähe wohnt. Wir haben sie ebenfalls (so wie Ingrid zuvor in Bath) bei den Blue-Badge-Tourguides gefunden: Ulla Thiessen. Alles passte. Dieses Mal haben sich Bruno und ich uns ganz nach hinten des Tourans gesetzt. Gar nicht mal so schlecht die Platzverhältnisse. Der Anfang der Tour begann jedoch sehr "ärgerlich". Als wir im Auto saßen, erzählt uns Ulla, dass wir die ganze vor dem St. Mary's Hospital gewartet haben. Hier wurde der kleine George geboren und ich habe die Wartezeit nicht genutzt um die Stufen zu küssen auf dem Kate und William runtergelaufen sind... Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!



Our vehicle arrived. Our tour guide came. Exactly as agreed. It fit perfectly that we just arrived at Paddington Station since she was living close by. We also found her (like Ingrid before in Bath) with the Blue-Badge-Tourguides: Ulla Thiessen. Everything fit. That time Bruno and I sat in the rear of the Volkswagen Touran. The space availability was not so bad. The beginning of the tour was somehow "angry". While we were sitting in the car, Ulla told us, that we waited all the time in front of St. Mary's Hospital. Here Little George was born, and I did not use the waiting time to kiss the steps, Kate and William were walking on... Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

We crossed the Hyde Park to Princess-Diana-Memorial-Fountain. Ulla offered us to go closer, but we wanted to see as much as possible in a short time to give Bruno's parents a very first impression of London. So we stayed for a few minutes at the fence and took some pictures... "Goodbye England's rose - May you ever grow in our hearts - You were the grace that placed itself - Where lives were torn apart...".



Es geht quer durch den Hyde Park zum Prinzessin-Diana-Gedenkbrunnen. Ulla bietet uns an, dass wir auch näher drangehen, aber wir wollten ja möglichst viel in einer kurzen Zeit erste Eindrücke von London für Brunos Eltern gewinnen. Und daher bleiben wir nur einige Minuten am Zaun stehen und fotografieren... Auch heute scheint sich etwas zu tun, weil eine Schlange vor der Kasse zu sehen ist. Aber spontan klappt es wohl nicht. Im nächsten Leben.

Wir sehen das Albert-Denkmal. Durch den Blue Badge darf Ulla auch mal in den Busspuren halten, damit wir gucken können.



We saw the Albert-Memorial. Due to the Blue Badge, Ulla was allowed to stop in the bus lane, that we could have a sneak view.

And a short view over the the Kensington Palace. Here were the Duke and Duchess of Kent Edward II. and Katherine were living. You knew them from the prize-giving at the Wimbledon-Tournament and the small talks with the ballboys and girls. Temporary William and Kate were living here. It was the last residence of Diana before she passed away.



Und noch ein kurzer Blick zum Kensington Palace. Hier wohnen der Herzog und die Herzögin von Kent Edward II., bzw. Katherine. Kennt man von den Preisverleihungen beim Wimbledon-Turniers und den Gesprächen mit den Balljungen und -mädchen. Zeitweise haben dort William und Kate gelebt. Vor allem war es der letzte Wohnsitz von Diana vor ihrem Tod.

Wir fahren weiter zu Harrod's und sehen uns dort um. Sieht alles sehr nett aus, aber nicht unsere Preislage. Ich zahle nicht 40.00 GBP/kg für eine gelbe Pittahaya.



We went to Harrod's and had a look there around. All looked very nice, but it did not fit into my price range. I did not pay 40.00 GBP/kg for yellow dragon fruit.

Und dann geht es zu Diana und Dodi, an die im Untergeschoss erinnert wird.



Then we went to Diana and Doni, where you could find a memorial in the basement.

Indeed, we had to do a selfie too.

Wir gehen auch langsam wieder zurück im Wagen. Der steht in der Straße, die nach Brunos Vater benannt ist: Hans.



We went slowly back to the car. It was parked int he road which was named after Bruno's father: Hans.

In this road one luxury vehicle parked to the next. Many of the cars with Arabic license plates. I posed quickly in front of a Rolls-Royce in pink.



In dieser Straße steht eine Luxuskarosse nach der anderen. Viele mit arabischen Autokennzeichen. Ich posiere kurz vor einem Rolls-Royce in violett.

Wir halten noch schnell am Buckingham Palace, um hier noch ein paar Aufnahmen zu machen.

Slowly it became dark. For the perfect moment, we reached Picadilly Circus and the Westend (Musical-Theater-District).



Langsam wird es dunkel. Zum perfekten Zeitpunkt erreichen wir den Picadilly Circus und den Westend (Musical-Theater-Viertel).

Es geht weiter zum "Big Ben", was leider sachlich falsch ist. Big Ben ist nur einer der Glocken im Eilizabeth Tower. Dieser ist wieder Teil des Parlaments.



We headed for "Big Ben", which was factual wrong. Big Ben was only one of the bells in the Elizabeth Tower. This was part of the Parliament.

Es geht weiter entlang der St. Margaret Kirche bzw. Westminster Abtei. Und nach der Hans Road erwischen wieder eine Straße, die nach Brunos Familie benannt ist: Little Smith Street.



We headed along the St. Margarets Church and Westminster Abbey. And hafter the Hans Road now we caught again a street which was named after Bruno's family: Little Smith Street.

Last stop before we had to return to Paddington Station: one crossing on the Tower-Bridge. We had the luck that right at the moment when arrived on the bridge, the bridge was unclasping.



Letzte Station bevor es zurück zum Bahnhof Paddington geht: einmal kurz über die Tower-Brücke. Wir haben Glück, weil in dem Augenblick als wir auf der Brücke ankommen, die Brücke aufgeklappt wird.

Hier macht sich das Glasdach des Autos bezahlt. Auch wir können von ganz hinten schön nach oben gucken. Ulla bringt uns rechtzeitig zum Bahnhof Paddington zurück. Sie würde hier, am Bahnhof Waterloo (Züge aus Southampton) oder am Bahnhof St. Pancras (Hochgeschwindigkeitszüge aus Dover) oder am Bahnhof Liverpool Street (Züge aus Harwich) oder auch am Bahnhof bzw. Busbahnhof Victoria (Regionalzüge aus Dover bzw. Fernbusse) auch andere Kreuzfahrer abholen und durch London führen. Der Van war wirklich praktisch: wir konnten schnell uns mal zur Seite stellen. Schnell rauspringen und mal fotografieren. Für uns war es perfekt. Andere können wir vorwerfen, dass ich bestimmte Sehenswürdigkeiten nicht gesehen habe geschweige denn etwas von innen gesehen habe. Aber das war gar nicht unser Ziel und außerdem bestimme ich immer noch selbst, was und wieviel ich davon sehen will. Also könnt ihr auch eure Kommentarversuche unterlassen, wenn ich eben nirgendst reingehen möchte. Ich versuche das meiste aus der kurzen Zeit rauszuholen, egal wo wir jetzt waren und gerade in London lief es hervorragend. Für einen ersten Eindruck war das Programm von Ulla perfekt. Sie holt aber auch gerne Gäste in Southampton, Dover oder Harwich ab und bringt sie auch wieder zurück. Auf jeden Fall ein perfekter Höhepunkt zum Ende der ganzen Reise. Daher nochmals danke an alle Tourguides in St. Helier, Milford Haven, Cornwall, Bath und London, die das meiste für uns rausgeholt haben, in der kurzen Zeit, die uns zur Verfügung stand. Besonderer Dank gilt einer Fremdenführerin, die uns gar nicht geführt hatte: Monika Cavaciuti. Obwohl wir sie gar nicht gebucht hatten, hat sie uns geholfen, dass wir Max für Cornwall gefunden hatten. Sie selbst konnte leider nicht. Dafür nochmals vielen Dank.



Here it was really worth to have a glass top roof. So we could see nicely from the back of the car. Ulla took us right on time back to Paddington Station. She would collect other cruisers from here, at Waterloo Station (Trains from Southampton, England) or at St. Pancras Station (High-Speed-Trains from Dover, England) or at Liverpool Street Station (Trains from Harwich, England) or also from Victoria Railways and Bus Station (Regional trains from Dover, England and Long-Distance-Buses) and guide them through London. The van was really very practically: we could simply stop quickly at the side. Simply jump out and taking pictures. For us, it was almost perfect. Others might accuse that we have not seen certain attractions or see anything inside. But that was not our target, and finally, I decide myself what and how much I would like to see. So do not try to make any comments that we did not want going inside. I tried to get the most of our limited time - no matter where we were and especially in London it worked perfectly well. For a very first impression, Ulla's itinerary was perfect. She would also pick up guests in Southampton, Dover or Harwich and would also deliver them back. Anyhow it was the perfect highlight at the end of the entire voyage. So thanks again to all tour guides in St. Helier, Milford Haven, Cornwall, Bath, and London, who get the most for us in the short time we only had. A special thank again to a tour guide who did not guide us: Monika Cavaciuti. Although we did not book her, she helped us to find Max for Cornwall. She could not come, unfortunately. Again thanks again.
